Social Viewing

Just seeing this commentary over at James McQuivey’s OmniMedia. In this post, McQuivey was responding to the October news that CBS had added social video functionality to their content.

For now, though, most of us are so darn happy to have the ability to watch online video on demand that we’re not left wanting more viewing options and features. We’re pretty satisfied. Give it some time, though. There will be some applications for this. I like to watch Heroes with my family even when I’m on the road. This way, we could watch together. In fact, one of the keys to this kind of viewing experience will be when it gets ported to the TV so that TV-PC social viewing can occur.

Key is the part about giving it time until there are applications for it. Hopefully, that’s not far off. For us, the enthusiasm of the audience of a show like Dorm Life makes all the difference, and the more we can do to connect them with each other, the better. The issue of having to get people to watch and comment simultaneously is a tricky one. We think that figuring out a way to let people watch asynchronous-style, yet have the experience of watching together, is going to be the real win.

Hoping that JanRain’s RPX system is a step in that direction, and that we can get ASM video-site partners like YouTube, Hulu, Blip and Metacafe on board the portable social data train asap.

Twilight crowds nearly stampede ASM execs in Westwood

After seeing this post, ASM CEO Peter White sent a tersely-dictated memo via the intra-office pneumatic communications channel, expressing concern about the potential that the media trade press would interpret this post as an admission that ASM execs were actually attending the Twilight premiere at the Bruin theater.

Be thus advised: the UCLA-heavy ASM squad were in fact there to procure a dozen nut-free cookies from Diddy Riese, to distribute as a peace offering at Dave Goetsch’s USC class on creating successful web video properties that we were guest-teaching later that evening.

Dorm Life holding steady as #1 web show on Hulu’s all-time list

Dorm Life continues to top Hulu’s list of most popular web shows, staying just ahead of Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible. In addition to topping the all-time list, DL is also perched at the apex of the weekly and monthly most-popular lists as of this writing.

ASM collected gold awards from the W3 panel in both the “Comedy - Extended or Series” and “Entertainment” categories, and silver awards for web design and distinction in the broadcast/tv category.

I’m pretty sure Hulu displays show rankings left to right by row, starting in the top row and moving down. If so:

In the daily rankings, Dorm Life is the most popular web series, at #48 overall, with Dr. Horrible at #98.
For the week, Dorm Life is the most popular web series, at #75 with Dr. Horrible at #84
In Hulu’s all-time rankings, Dorm Life is also the top web series, at #105, Dr. Horrible at #112.

Dr. Horrible retains the upper hand in the monthly listings, at #66, while Dorm Life is #70.
